Why Kids Need BOOKS!
Having a background in early childhood education, I myself have seen first-hand how the connection between reading books and children’s development come hand in hand. So many rewarding feelings and skills can come from reading a child a story for both adults and children. Kids are born ready to learn.
When children are exposed to books and reading from a young age, it helps build a strong foundation for their language and literacy skills. Reading to kids not only introduces them to new words and concepts, but also fosters a love for reading and learning.
Through reading, kids can explore different worlds, cultures, and perspectives which can expand their understanding of the world around them. It also helps with cognitive development, critical thinking and creativity. Additionally reading together can strengthen the bond between adults and children, creating a positive nurturing environment for growth and learning.
So, encouraging early childhood reading sets the stage for a lifetime of learning and curiosity. It’s a wonderful way to spark imagination, enhance vocabulary, and instil a lifelong love of books and learning in children.
It doesn’t have to be hard finding the “right” book to read to your child! It’s essential to consider their age, interests, and reading level. For younger children, colourful picture books with simple stories and rhymes are a great choice. As children grow older you can introduce more complex stories with engaging plots and characters. Look for books that encourage interaction, discussion and imagination. Remember the most important thing is to make reading an enjoyable and engaging experience for the child!
Some favourite books I’ve found to be winners in my home and with the libraries Storytime:
I really really need a wee – Karl Newson
Bush Baby is in a fix. She didn’t need a wee before she left home – now she needs one right away! Uh-oh! But what will she do if there’s just nowhere to go? A pant-wettingly funny tale of determination and self-awareness – packed with toilet humour! The perfect picture book to teach children the importance of that last-chance bathroom trip!
Hickory dickory dash – Tony Wilson
Before the clock infamously strikes one, a poor mother mouse must search the house for her two missing sons. But she’d better watch out for the cat!
Western Downs Libraries have fun and casual Storytime sessions that run for babies and toddlers that can help educate parents, carers and grandparents on how to read and interact with their children through rhymes, reading, songs and activities. This program focuses heavily around the First 5 Forever – Talk, Read, Sing, Play.
Joining the Library is free and will give you access to many wonderful resources including this easy to use from home app Story Box Library – Western Downs Libraries which will make finding the perfect book to read your young one much easier than deciding what is on the menu for dinner.
