Preserve your VHS Tapes
Advancements in technology are changing how we capture and preserve memories. Devices like VHS tapes, once essential for recording our most precious moments, have become outdated and prone to deterioration. Western Downs Libraries now offer a solution to help preserve these memories through our expanded Preservation Station.
You may have already heard about the Preservation Station…
You may already know about our Preservation Station, which allows members to digitise printed photographs, film negatives, slices and documents. Now, we’ve extended our services to include VHS tape preservation, helping the community transition from outdated technology to digital formats. As we continue to embrace the latest advancements through our Makerspaces, Virtual Reality, and STEM workshops, this new offering ensures that cherished memories can be safeguarded using modern technology.
Do you have VHS tapes that have captured moments you’d like to preserve?
Now is the perfect time to digitise your VHS tapes and transfer to a more stable digital format before the contents are lost forever. VHS tapes degrade over time due to their reliance on magnetic charge, with significant deterioration expected after 10-25 years. Factors such as heat, humidity, and magnetic fields accelerate this process, meaning important memories stored on these tapes could soon be lost.
You can now preserve cherished memories you have stored on VHS tapes by converting them to digital files in our libraries. This is a new service and allows for library members to digitise their VHS content onto USB drives, ensuring these valuable moments are safeguarded for future generations.
