Reading your way through the school holidays
The holidays are here, and it is time to hit the books. Let me explain, it is important for children to continue reading over the school holidays to help them maintain their literacy skills.
This is a great time to introduce different genres to your children. This way they will be learning new words, getting ideas for stories and practicing their reading. We have a large range of Beginner Readers, Emergent Readers and Early Readers. These come in many genres, and also different fonts – making mastering reading easy for all levels of readers!
Pass away the summer holidays playing word games such as Bananagrams and Hangman, or Taboo. Playing easy games such as I Spy will help your child associate letters with real things they see in the environment.
A further suggestion is to listen to audiobooks and the library again has the answer. Download the Borrowbox app – all you need is your library card. This is great for those long car trips, or camping, or just lazing around the house as children are often captivated by a narrated story.
Finally, the best advice I can give you is to bring your children to the library! Give them some agency to choose their own books. Find books that relate to your child’s interest and keep their daily reading routine to short 20 minutes per day.
Why not make the most of the holidays by exploring everything your local library has to offer? From exciting new books to interactive activities and resources, there’s something for everyone. Drop by and let us help you make reading a fun and memorable part of your family’s holiday season!
