Western Downs Libraries love having children and young people visit the library. We actively encourage free, frequent, wide and creative use of our services and spaces. Please note, as a parent or guardian, you are responsible for both the welfare and behaviour of your child when they are using library services.

Unattended Children:

We want your children to be safe, and we need your help! Please make sure you supervise your child(ren) at all times while in the library. If we see a child looking lost and lonely, we will ask you to supervise them. If you do not do so, please be aware you may be asked to leave the library.

Western Downs Libraries encourages fostering independence for young people using the library. If children or young people are left unattended at closing time, library staff will attempt to contact parents or guardians of unattended children for a period of 15 minutes after the library has closed. If library staff cannot reach you, our next step is to contact the Queensland Police Service.

Inappropriate Behaviour:

The library is a shared space; as such, children and young adults must be mindful of their actions when using the library.

  • Please consider other library users and staff, use your ‘inside voice’ during conversation, and refrain from playing loud or disruptive music.
  • To avoid injuring yourself or others, we request that you do not run, jump, climb or swing while in the library.
  • Our resources (including books, computers, furniture, equipment, and gaming consoles) are for everyone to share, please make sure you leave them the way that you found them.
  • Inappropriate or disruptive use of the Internet, computers and/or mobile phones will not be tolerated.

Our library community works best when everyone is kind, considerate, well-mannered and polite to one another. If any of the above expectations are not followed, library staff may request acceptable conduct.

When a child or young person has violated these expectations, the library reserves the right to inform the parent or guardian of the issue and request that they attend to the child and/or ensure the cessation of the inappropriate behaviour. Should this behaviour continue, more serious consequences, such as temporary or permanent exclusion from the premises, or contacting the Queensland Police Service, may be required.

Help us to make sure everyone has fun and remains safe in the library. Your children are precious to us – please keep a close eye on them.
